Regiment: 290019 RWF
Battles: Gallipoli & Egypt

George was born to Harry, a draper's assistant (see previous record) & Sarah (Evans) in Llanllwchaiarn at 18 Bryn Street. It was recorded that he travelled with his father in 1903 to South Africa, from Southampton to Cape, where he worked as a joiner on the King Edward Memorial, Tubercolosio. He married Joyce (Woolley) in 1908 & had 3 sons & 5 daughters. He was awarded the DCM medal for 'conspicuous gallantry & devotion on 10/08/1915 at Suvla Bay as a stretcher-bearer, carrying the wounded out of action under enemy fire' and on 19/02/1916 was presented with a gold wrist watch and a purse of 30 sovereigns by the people of Newtown. After leaving Gallipoli the 7th RWF went to Alexandria to guard the Suez Canal in intense heat, and in 1917 went to Gaza where he was awarded another Bar on 02/02/1917 to his DCM with the citation 'For conspicuous gallantry & devotion to duty when in charge of regimental stretcher-bearers, in carrying men back from an advanced position with absolute disregard for his personal safety. The following day he showed exceptional gallantry in removing the wounded from an exposition after the enemy had turned machine-gun fire on them' When asked why he had gone back to the beach to collect another casualty he replied 'They were shooting at wounded men'. He next went to Beersheba. The following was published in the Gazette after he was mentioned in dispatches from the East. “The many friends and admirers of Mr George Hibbot, who has been recommended for the DCM, will be pleased to learn that he is in England on sick leave and is expected home shortly. He was at Eastleigh Clearing Hospital and was drafted to another hospital. A number of distinguished honours have been distributed among officers and men of the 7th RWF for service in their last engagement including Segt George Hibbot, B Co, a bar to his DCM.”
