Thomas George Deane Burdett

Thomas was born to George Deane, a bank manager & Claudia H. (Morrris) and had 2 sisters & a brother. He had previously been a solicitor. He was awarded the Military Cross on 28/12/1914 for an 'act of examplary gallantry during active operations'. He served in Gallipoli at the Battle of Sari Blair and Scimitar, and was moved to Mudros on 11/12/1915 where he served for a short time until 23/12/1915. He was moved to Egypt on Suez Canal Defence for 12 months, then to Palestine where he helped to capture Jerusalem. Later, on 28/6/1917 he was mentioned in despatches for gallant conduct in the field as a member of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force. He "died a glorious death in Palestine" & was awarded postumously the Military Cross which was presented to his mother by lieut. General Pitcairn Campbell, Chief of Western Command. He was buried at Beersheba War Cemetery & is commemorated at St. David's Church.
